Mountain Plains Crunch Off
In celebration of National Farm to School Month in October, states throughout the Mountain Plaines Region (Colorado, Montana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming) are competing to see which state can get the most "crunches" into a local apple or other local produce, per capita.
South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension and the South Dakota Department of Education's Division of Child and Adult Nutrition Services are partnering to bring this event to the state in October. South Dakotans are invited to crunch into local produce and help South Dakota win the "Crunch Crown." "Crunch Off" participants will join students, teachers, farmers, parents, community members and local food enthusiasts in celebrating the wonderful produce South Dakota has to offer.
Platte-Geddes School took part in the crunch off Thursday, October 14th.
Thank you to the following businesses for contributing to the "Crunch Off":
Platte Food Center
Dakota Plains Agency
American Family
Cole's Computers
Platte Enterprise
HUB International
Vicki's Sauna and Spa
The Blue Room
BankWest
Today’s “Good News Calls” went out to a couple of outstanding friends. These two girls showed extreme kindness and understanding to a friend who was having a rough day. They are a fine example of friends showing kindness to another person who really needed a few words of encouragement and a gentle squeeze of support. Thank you to Montana Veurink and Lydia Dyk for demonstrating the Panther Way Expectation of "Kindness" and for quietly and kindly assisting another person who needed a helping hand. Montana and Lydia were nominated for the GNC by Mrs. K and Mrs. Knecht. Thank you, sweet girls, for the kindness shown to others.
We accepted the award last night for being named a National Distinguished School. (And for Cedar Grove's National Distinguished School Award in 2020.) The banquet was outstanding. The State DOE made every single educator in attendance feel honored!! Here are a few photos from the celebration. Secretary of Education, Tiffany Sanderson is pictured with us in the second photo. Congratulations Everyone!! 💯💯❤️❤️
The Platte-Geddes High School "Hope Squad" and the Elementary Student Council are sponsoring a t-shirt fundraiser for Addison Walstad. Addison was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in her leg. She is currently heading to Minneapolis where she will undergo treatment at the Children's Hospital of Minnesota. Addison is a courageous young lady who is facing her diagnosis and upcoming chemotherapy treatments with strength and bravery. We feel this t-shirt design embodies Addison perfectly. The cost of the Bella canvas t-shirt is $16 and with each t-shirt purchase, $10 will be given to Addison. If you wish to support Addison in her journey, please order your t-shirt through JD's Fashion and Screen Art in Platte @ 337-2111. Thank you!

Students from various schools throughout the state attended and worked as a large group as well as small group sectionals. Students ended their day at 3:00 p.m. with a rehearsal of all the songs.

Good Morning Platte-Geddes Elementary Staff and Parents,
Yesterday, I received a WONDERFUL phone call from the South Dakota Department of Education. They informed me that Platte-Geddes Elementary School has been named a NATIONAL ESEA DISTINGUISHED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL for South Dakota. We were selected as a DISTINGUISHED School for our "Exceptional Student Performance". I told Shannon Malone from the SD Department of Education that they had made the right choice and indeed, "Platte-Geddes Elementary IS a Distinguished Elementary School"!! This award confirms that we are among the top elementary schools in the entire nation.
We announced the award to all students and staff members over the intercom and went to each classroom to congratulate the students and the teachers, paraprofessionals, and all staff members on their great work in earning this well-deserved award for our school. As an elementary school, this recognition confirms that our students are being taught and learning the important grade level skills we present to them. We know that we continuously set high academic expectations for our kiddos; and this award is proof that they continue to rise to these high standards we set for them.
As a staff at Platte-Geddes Elementary, this has been a goal for our school. We talk about our desire to be named a "National Distinguished School" or a "South Dakota Blue Ribbon School District". And now we have achieved the goal. We always knew we were among the BEST and now we have confirmation of that success. We will receive a banner to hang in our school that states, "Platte-Geddes Elementary School is a Distinguished Elementary School".
This award and our student success would not be possible without the support, encouragement, and cooperation of all of YOU as parents. You send us outstanding kids that we have the pleasure of working with each day. Thank you to all of you as parents for the homework you assist with, for reading to your kiddos, and for having them ready for school each day. The award should be celebrated by EVERYONE including our students, parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff!
CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE on a well-deserved recognition in being named a "National Distinguished Elementary School in South Dakota!"
Educationally Yours,
Jennifer
